Electric cars are catching on. They are cars that run on electricity, not gas. One thing about electric cars — among the many things that is — is that there are different types of plugs to charge the damn things.
The J1772 plug, the CCS plug, the CHAdeMO plug, and the Tesla plug are now none but not limited charging plugs. The J1772 is the most widely used plug in the US. It resembles a large version of a standard household plug.
The CCS plug is newer and can charge your car faster than the J1772 plug. The CHAdeMO plug is generally used by automakers in Japan, including Nissan. The Tesla plug is exclusive to Tesla cars.
But when you’re deciding on a charging plug for your electric car, start by considering which plug fits your car’s charger. Some cars can accommodate different plugs and others just one type.
When you compare charging plugs, make sure to check how quickly they charge, whether they’re compatible with other chargers, and if you can find charging stations. Some plugs are faster at charging your car, a notable feature to have if you are in a hurry to get back on the road.
Ensure the plug you choose is compatible with the charging stations near you. There are some standard plugs too, which are more prevalent and it’s easier to find a charging station that’s compatible with your plug.
New plug types and technologies are being invented as electric cars become more popular. Some of the exciting new things is wireless charging, where you would not have to even plug your car, and hyper-fast charging — you can fill (the tank), so to speak, in just a few minutes.
